  • Tor Browser is probably the best-known tool to communicate anonymously on the web.
  • CyberGhost protects your anonymity and provides access to blocked websites or blocked content. However, pop-ups offering to switch to a premium plan are somewhat irritating.

Privacy

  • Ghostery – privacy browser extension
  • DuckDuckGo – search engine that doesn’t track you and saves your searches

Password generation

  • WolframAlfa is actually an answer engine, but the scope of tasks it can cope with is truly impressive. Type in “password” and it will generate a random combination for you.

  • 1Password for Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad or Android helps create and fill-in passwords across the web. The Mac and Windows products are available as demo versions for 30 days, however, you have to pay to be able to use them further.
  • LastPass  is a free tool for Windows and Mac stores all of its data in the cloud. It can automatically save your logins, help you generate passwords and automatically fill in your passwords when you visit a site.
  • KeePass and KeePassX are a free, open-source password managers which can also be used in a portable mode and run off a USB drive. At the moment, they seem to be the most popular free tools. They allow you to save passwords using only one primary password to unlock them.
  • RoboForm is for Windows users. It also has mobile apps for Android, iPhone, BlackBerry and Symbian and can run off a USB drive. The RoboForm Everywhere license allows you to use RoboForm software on all your Windows computers, Macs, and other mobile devices and costs 8,95 euros in the first year.
  • Firefox Sync is a free tool which syncs and protects your passwords, bookmarks and browser tabs.
  • Passpack enables sharing and keeping track of passwords for teams and groups.A free account lets you save up to 100 passwords.

  • Microsoft lets you test the strength of your password.
  • howsecureismypassword.net not only lets you check the security of your password, but also tells you how much time it would take to crack it. The website also provides comments on your password such as its  length and character variety or if there’re repeated patterns which make the password easy to guess.
  • This password check returns the strength of your password in bits and evaluates its security – from very low to very high.
